BC Midget Championships 2017 – Kelowna

This past weekend fifteen Blackjack athletes competed in the BC Midgets Championships in Kelowna. We arrived at the Telemark Nordic on Friday afternoon so everyone was able to ski their courses and prepare for Saturday’s classic interval race. We then checked into the Cove resort and all thoroughly enjoyed the great amenities on offer there: movie theater, basketball, mini-golf and hot tub. After a great potluck dinner and our team meeting everyone was fueled up and excited about our first race on Saturday.

The highlights of the classic race on Saturday morning included great skiing by all and some top ten results. Notably, this was Natasha’s first ever race! Next up was the afternoon relay race. With so many athletes, we were able to enter two official and two unofficial teams. The girls fought hard to achieve a fifth-place finish and one of our unofficial teams placed third in that category. The kids really got into the spirit of the event with some great costumes. To complete a busy day, we all had lots of fun at the banquet that evening. Sunday morning saw the free technique sprint races. With the king’s court format that involved 4 heats everyone had the opportunity to experience the excitement of sprinting. All the athletes pushed their hardest and there were some pretty close finishes. Again, we had several top ten finishes, the highlight being Merrick’s fifth place. The trip was a great success and everyone achieved new highs, had lots of fun, and made new friends.
